“I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten…” Joel 2:25a (NIV)

Happy new year, everybody! It’s nice to be back. I hope you all are enjoying Christmastime (if you follow your old Christmas carols, you know there are twelve days of Christmas, so it’s still Christmas even if you have already scuffed your new kicks).

In past years, I’ve shared with you a focus word — a theme word that I hold as an intention for the new year. In 2016, for example, I had the word Desire. Last year, it was Breakthrough. This year the word that keeps coming back to me, in and out of prayer, is the word Restoration. Let me unpack what this word is saying to me and why it is my focus word for 2019.

Get a vision for the new year

Worldview

If you’ve been reading here awhile, you know I’m big on worldview — specifically a biblical worldview. You can read more about that here . But in the cheat code version, a world view addresses four main issues and questions. They are:

Creation – Where did we come from?

Fall — What is our fundamental problem?

Redemption — What’s the cure for our problem?

Restoration — In light of the cure, how should we live?

From the outset, the word restoration is powerful to me because if its broad scope and purposefulness in setting things right. I am concerned with personal restoration in some measurable ways, as well as with the abstract “out there”, as I hope to illustrate. Here are the areas I think of when I consider Restoration for 2019:

Health

This is primarily an intention for friends and family members who have been struggling with chronic conditions as well as the ravages of time. In 2019, I’d like to see them restored to health through better choices, doing what they can. And I pray God’s grace and healing for what they can’t do on their own.

Fitness

By now, it’s a cliche that everybody wants to get back in shape in the new year. I confess that last year, I let myself drift from maintenance mode to something below that. I feel it. i see it. I know what to do and I’m going to change it. One of my best Christmas gifts — in true “Advent Conspiracy” spirit — was several sessions with a personal trainer to kickstart my motivation. Just what I needed.

Career/Finances

Last year turned out well. In the arena of work and finances, I experienced something of the breakthrough I was hoping for. We were, at last, able to tackle some pesky debt. Restoration for me in this area will mean making better use of the money God entrusts to me, sticking to a workable budget, and seeing to some things that I should have taken care of a long time ago.

We all do the best we can with what we have, but eventually, the house has to be painted, the refrigerator or the water heater dies, you have to replace the garage door, or the car will need new tires. I’m thankful to be in a position where these events — when they come — won’t be a crisis.

Meanwhile, I’m thankful for the success I’ve enjoyed in my current role, and the contributions I’ve made to the company. At the same time I’m feeling restless in this new year. Restoration in this regard would mean a new challenge — an opportunity to make my mark and create value in a new space. It could be I’m projecting this onto my career from a different facet of my life, but I have learned not to ignore this when it comes.

Society/Politics

I have published several posts based on Roy H. Williams’ and Michael Drew’s book, Pendulum, and my reading of the news suggests the authors’ predictions are, unfortunately, true. Restoration in this sense will be to seek the welfare of the city and the area where I live.

I believe what Jesus said about our being salt and light in this world. If you’ve been reading these posts over the years, you’ll have noticed that I tend not to discuss partisan politics much (policy, yes). That’s intentional. I have very strong opinions, and I even like to argue, but I think the times are such that we need to emphasize what we hold in common, rather than picking at the scab of where we differ.

I want to see alienated friends and family members restored to each other, and I am going to continue to stay out of the social media mud. If we can avoid the kind of trouble keyboard warriors like to conjure up, good. If, on the other hand, things get as bad as the book predicts, I want to prepare myself and my household to come out on the other side intact and to be part of the — you guessed it — restoration.

Manners and morals

The famous British abolitionist William Wilberforce set about to end the cruel and immoral slave trade, but also to work for, as he put it, “the reformation of morals.” Restoration in our day will take the form of engaging in public questions with an eye toward solving problems. For my part, I intend to do this with the best thinking I can muster and in as kind a manner as I can. I intend never to be a doormat, but I don’t want to treat people of goodwill like one, either.

Those who want to pick a fight or wish us harm will be in our prayers. After that, we’ll deal appropriately.

Wanting to be part of the solution

When we look back at that worldview section, it’s hard to miss that God’s purpose in sending Jesus to be our redeemer was ultimately to restore and renew not just his favorites, but the entire cosmos. It is dented, dinged-up, and rusty, but God says He plans to renew it all. Trust me — you want to be part of it.

So like Wilberforce, let’s use the resources, the strengths, the gifts, and the contacts we have to make this battered world a much better place.

How will we know when we get there?

Quite simply, we won’t. But just because we can’t in our own strength construct a Heaven on earth that is not a reason we should not strive to make this earth as much like Heaven as it can possibly be. Think about what this would look like in terms of justice, education, opportunity, and economic and social mobility.

I assure you, I didn’t get hit in the head and become a Utopian Socialist. I am still a believer in capitalism as the greatest engine of prosperity for the greatest number of people — but we can do better. Part of this resides in the object of our service. If we love and serve God and love our neighbor — seeking the best for him — we aren’t going to pile up wealth so we can hoard it. Instead, we will seek to put it to work to accomplish the work of restoration. Where we have been successful, we will create opportunities for others to succeed. We will connect people with needs to the people who have the means to address those needs. And we will live in community as beggars who found bread and are busy telling other beggars where they can find it, too.

I look forward to what this year will bring — especially since I see the amount of work it will take.

So how about you? What is your word for 2019? What does it mean to you? (If you don’t have one yet, it’s not too late.)

Merry Christmas!

While we celebrate the incarnation of Christ Jesus, I want to ask you to consider the example of a man who was indispensable to the Christmas story — Joseph the carpenter.

St. Joseph and the Infant Christ (c. 1670-1685) by Baciccio

Meet Joseph

When we first meet Joseph in the Bible, he is defined in terms of his relationships — as the son of his father, Jacob, and the husband of Mary, the mother of Christ (Matthew 1:16). From there we learn that Joseph was engaged to Mary, and that Mary was pregnant by God the Holy Spirit.

Joseph’s choices

Although Joseph could have avenged his honor and had Mary stoned to death for her supposed adultery, instead he made up his mind to break their engagement quietly. But instead, a messenger of God — an angel — appeared to Joseph and told him not to be afraid to proceed with the marriage, because Mary was carrying God’s son. So Joseph obeyed God. The only other narrative mentions of Joseph in the Gospel according to Matthew show him moving his family to safety in Egypt, and later to Nazareth to avoid murderous and corrupt rulers.

Family ties

In the Gospel according to Luke, we see Joseph taking his bride to his ancestral home, Bethlehem, because of a census decree. Jesus was born there just as it had been prophesied. Bethlehem was significant because Joseph was descended from King David — the greatest king of Israel — and the prophecies regarding the messiah told that he would be the son of David.

Joseph’s greatness

Despite the slight number of scripture verses in which Joseph appears, his impact is tremendous. Christmas could not have happened without him. Here are the lessons I take from the life of Joseph:

No whining — According to the genealogy of Jesus, Joseph could well have been the rightful heir to the throne of King David. Instead he was a tradesman –a carpenter. We do not have any account that suggests Joseph complained about his station in life, or about the circumstances he and his fiancée found themselves in.

No drama — When it appeared Mary had been unfaithful to him, his love for her caused him not to want to subject her to disgrace. His plan was to quietly send her away.

Faithful — Joseph is described as a man of noble character. Although this is not unheard of in the offspring of kings, it is by no means guaranteed. Note that Joseph willingly accepted the role of Jesus’ earthly father, even though scripture tells us he did not have marital relations with Mary until after the birth of Jesus. That is, he took the responsibility without any immediate gratification.

Devout — We see Joseph hearing from God via angels and dreams, so we must conclude that he was seeking God’s wisdom. Elsewhere we see him presenting the newborn Jesus to be dedicated at the temple, according to the law. Certainly Joseph revered God to have ingrained such habits of belief and practice.

Obedient — When God communicated His will to Joseph, it appears Joseph went straight to it. Human nature was no different in Joseph’s day than it is in ours, so clearly Joseph must have known he’d have to deal with the whispers and gossip of his neighbors. Based on the information given us in the Bible, he didn’t let anything deter him.

Cool as the other side of the pillow — When evil Herod wanted to kill the newborn King of the Jews, Joseph got instructions to take Mary and Jesus into Egypt to escape Herod’s murderous intent. And he just did it. When news reached Joseph that Herod had died, God let him know it was safe to move back to Israel. Again, he simply moved, although he did avoid Herod’s son by settling in Nazareth. (This decision fulfilled another prophecy regarding Jesus – this is why Jesus was considered a Nazarene.)

About the painting: This is “Saint Joseph and the Infant Christ” painted by Baciccio — also known as Giovanni Battista Gaulli. I love this portrayal of Joseph — his expression conveys such love, wonder and reverence. What genuine nobility! What a man!

So how about you? What of Joseph’s example can you put to work in your life? Add your comments below.

Note the B24 in the background.

My late father-in-law was a veteran of World War II, He was one of four brothers, all of whom were drafted away from their family farm in rural Tennessee.

After completing his training, he became a Technical Sergeant in the Army Air Corps — the precursor to the US Air Force. His responsibilities included making in-flight repairs and serving as a waist gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator bomber in the European theater, as part of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

Like many men of his generation, he rarely talked about his experiences during the war, downplaying the danger and his role. “It was late in the war by the time I got over there,” he always said. Once when my grandmother asked if he had ever been to Germany, he gave a slight smile and said, “No, but I’ve been over it.”

Following the war, he returned to the farm for a while before enrolling in Tennessee Tech on the GI Bill. Following his graduation from college, he earned a doctorate in agronomy and genetics from the University of Wisconsin.

With his PhD, he took a position as a research agronomist with the US Department of Agriculture and was assigned to a research station at a large state university. He worked there the rest of his career, developing numerous soybean cultivars that fed millions and teaching graduate students from around the world.

As distinguished as his career was, he was also a devoted husband and father, raising my wife and her siblings in a godly household.

Over the past dozen years or so, we have seen popular sentiment regarding military service return to an appropriate level of respect and gratitude. This is as it should be.

At the same time, I hear and read some people saying that the US is no longer worthy of such devotion or service. I am not here to argue for or against — especially not with those who have served. On this occasion, however, I want to commend those who, like my father-in-law, saw their duty, did it and came home to build an exemplary life. This is still a county that produces such men. That is worth preserving.

So how about you? What lessons did you learn from your own military service, or that of your friends or family members? How are you using that wisdom to be your best? Add your comments below.

But it’s only an object unless you learn to use it.

Although I started with lessons, I was prideful and thought all that music theory was boring, so I quit wasting Mom’s money and learned to play by ear. That worked reasonably well until my mid 20’s, when I became aware that there were entire genres I could not play because I didn’t understand the rules. Slowly, I began to come around to the belief that learning music theory would make me a better musician.

Not long after I began this process, PBS ran a series hosted by jazz great Wynton Marsalis. Although I was not a huge fan of jazz at the time, I appreciated the way Marsalis explained music from a musician’s point of view. My favorite episode was titled “Taming the Monster” and it was about the why and how of practice. Wynton Marsalis laid out his rules for getting the most from time spent practicing. He called them “Wynton’s Ways to Practice.” What appears below is a transcription of my handwritten notes.* I have found these useful not only for ordering my time in the woodshed, but also for living with greater effectiveness.

WYNTON’S WAYS TO PRACTICE

1. Seek out private instruction – the best you can afford.

2. Write out a practice schedule. Cover all the fundamentals of your instrument.

3. Set realistic goals to chart your development.

4. Concentrate when practicing.

5. Relax. Practice slowly.

6. Practice longer on things you can’t play – (the hard parts).

7. Play everything as if it’s important/difficult/interesting/serious – always play with maximum expression.

8. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you make a mistake.

9. Don’t show off.

10. Think for yourself.

11. Be optimistic.

12. Look for connections between your music and other things.

Whether or not you’re a musician, this is excellent advice. Try to apply Wyntons’ Ways to Practice to your hobbies, your work, your fitness regimen and your spiritual life and let me know how it works for you.

So how about you? In what area of your life can you use these techniques? Add your comments below.

*Clearly, the credit belongs to Wynton Marsalis, even though my notes may contain direct quotations and paraphrased sections.

If there’s one area where this generation is stuck, this is it.

The Water Was Dirty Before You Got In

Now, before you conclude that I’m pointing my finger at you, please realize that the Boomer cohort gave us the sexual revolution and rampant divorce, and the Gen X cohort was equally careless about sex and marriage. But it’s even worse than that. These are the guys who grew up to convince you that everyone but you was sexually active, to urge the women you know to emulate the worst of promiscuous men, and to offer you pornography pretty much anywhere and anytime — and all so they could separate you from your money. If you want poor examples, the generations ahead of you are shot through with them.

Applying wisdom — that’s a horse of a different color!

So if you’re a typical American male, you were probably exposed to pornography somewhere around age ten. But even if you didn’t see any sexually explicit magazines, videos or websites in your youth, you’ve been awash in a culture that has turned sex into a commodity devoid of any spiritual significance. As a man who has spent much of his career in and around sales, I say it’s lazy to use sex to sell. As bad as that is, it’s worse to be so checked out that you allow it to influence you. There is a better way.

Meet King Solomon

In the Old Testament (that’s the first 39 books of the Bible), we meet a king named Solomon. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba (there’s a story about the misuse of sex, right there). When Solomon succeeded his father as the king of Israel, God told Solomon to ask him for anything. In reply, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people. This pleased God and he promised Solomon that no one would be wiser or more honored than he.

In addition to building the Temple in Jerusalem, Solomon reportedly had 1,000 wives and concubines. (Here I should point out that just because the Bible describes something, it does not prescribe it.) Solomon is also credited with several books of the Bible — Ecclesiastes, The Song of Solomon, and Proverbs. And that brings us to the purpose of this post.

In Proverbs 5 Solomon writes this:

My son, be attentive to my wisdom;

Among his words of advice is a clear instruction to men to be the moral leaders in the arena of sexuality. His counsel is not that women are evil, but that a man should be aware that some are evil. I’d add that some don’t know any better. A man should take care not to be led astray by his desires, nor to let a forbidden woman play on those desires for her own ends. So if you’re in a dating relationship, you need to establish the moral framework and see to it that you avoid the circumstances that pose the greatest temptation.

I’ve encountered a popular misconception among some Christians: that women are inherently more virtuous than men. It isn’t true, and the Bible doesn’t support that idea at all. Men and women are equally fallen and equally in need of the grace of God to redeem their brokenness in all of life, not just their sexuality.

What Difference Does It Make?

Notice what’s at stake — a man’s honor, his years, his strength, his earnings his peace, his legacy, and his self-respect — and it all hinges on his self-control. I have lived long enough to know that regret is expensive. By that I mean there are decisions I took as a young man that I would not repeat if I had that choice. And no amount of wishing can undo the harms I caused through my immaturity, ignorance, or wilfulness. I am thankful that my regrets are mercifully few, but I am writing this blog to help you get the lessons without the regrets. Solomon’s life and his words are a free education in wise living — and you don’t have to suffer to get it.

The Rest of The Story

I’d love to tell you that Solomon himself was a perfect example to follow in the realm of sexual morality, but that isn’t true. Despite his wise and correct teaching about the snare of illicit sex, his fondness for the ladies led him to abandon faithfulness to God and to worship idols. Although it was tragic, this was, in fact, a mere formality, since any man who loves sex more than he loves God is already worshiping an idol.

It Isn’t Easy

To those of you who have committed to the proper use of God’s gift of sex, I want to encourage you to persevere. Honor God with your body and trust Him to give you what you need. And to those of you who have not, but now want to live chastely, know that God is always willing to welcome His repentant sons home. Even better, God promises to help us overcome temptation — even sexual temptation — going forward from here.

God’s standards for sexual morality are truly counter-cultural. But as Solomon’s good words and bad example demonstrate, they are critically important for men and the women they love — especially today.

So how about you? How are you applying God’s wisdom to help you lead a chaste life? Add your comments below.

-Romans 12:18 (ESV)

In Rock Hill, South Carolina, a judge recently vacated the sentences of nine civil rights activists who were arrested and convicted in the 1960’s. Their crime was sitting at the same lunch counter as whites in a local five and dime store — a violation of the Jim Crow laws of the time that demanded separation of the races.

Although it took more than 50 years for this injustice to be overturned in the court system, the Friendship Nine as they are known have been hailed as civil rights pioneers and lauded for their courage and willingness to confront the immorality of racial segregation — even though it cost them.

There will come a time in your life when you will recognize that something isn’t right. You’ll think to yourself, or say aloud, “Somebody ought to do something.” And then you’ll realize — “It’s got to be me.”

When that moment comes, will you be ready to accept the challenge? Here’s a sonnet from the poetry corner:

Stand

There comes a time to stand for what you know
To be the right, whatever be the cost.
Then get you up to speak, or do, or go
To fill some gaping breach, though you be tossed
From wave to towering wave, while dervish winds
Pull sail from yard, and blind your eyes with spray.
Do what you must; go fight beside your friends;
Do what you can, and more; go seize the day.
Fear not the foe, and damn the shores alee.
To win the fight, you must run to the van.
The valiant prisoner’s heart may yet be free;
The coward’s heart is chained, and never can.
Go fight your fight; you must do what you ought.
It’s better fought and lost than never fought.”
– Mark Lukey

Speaking out against powerful people and their interests is not without cost or consequences. Take note of that old Japanese proverb, “The nail that sticks up gets beaten down.” When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. engaged in civil disobedience, he understood that his breaking of unjust laws would still result in his going to jail. He did it anyway.

Likewise, if you are called to raise your hand or your voice against some wrong, you shouldn’t be surprised should you encounter opposition. No one can guarantee your success or assure your safety. Our society is as polarized as I have ever seen, and the lengths to which some people will go over mere differences of opinion is still surprising to me.

Even so, we must not allow ourselves to be cowed into silence. There really is such a thing as evil in the world and, as Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Whatever battle we’re called to, let’s prepare ourselves to do the right thing.

So how about you? What conversation or issue have you been avoiding? Haul it out into the daylight, kiss it on the mouth and watch it die. Add your comments below.

Note: I’m re-running this post in honor and memory of Mr. James Wells — one of the Friendship Nine — who died Sunday, July 8, at age 77.

Here’s a trip back to the poetry corner. If you’re discouraged about the kind of work that’s available to you currently, you might find this helpful. Here’s cowboy poet Red Steagall:

Shorty was here

The Fence That Me and Shorty Built

We’d picked up all the fencing tools
And staples off the road
An extra roll of “bob” wire
Was the last thing left to load

I drew a sleeve across my face
To wipe away the dirt
The young man who was helping me
Was tuckin’ in his shirt

I turned around to him and said,
“This fence is finally done
With five new strands of ‘bob’ wire
Shinin’ proudly in the sun

The wire is runnin’ straight and tight
With every post in line
The kinda job you’re proud of
One that stands the test of time.”

The kid was not impressed at all
He stared off into space
Reminded me of years ago
Another time and place

When I called myself a cowboy
I was full of buck and bawl
I didn’t think my hands would fit
Post augers and a maul

They sent me out with Shorty
And the ranch fence building crew
Well, I was quite insulted
And before the day was through

I let him know that I’m a cowboy
This ain’t what I do
I ain’t no dadgummed nester
I hired out to buckaroo

He said, “We’ll talk about that son
When we get in tonight
Right now you pick them augers up
It’s either that or fight.”

Boy I was diggin’ post holes
Faster than a Georgia mole
But if a rock got in my way
Well I simply moved the hole

So when the cowboys set the posts
The line went in and out
Old Shorty’s face got fiery red
And I can hear him shout

“Nobody but a fool would build
A fence that isn’t straight
I got no use for someone who ain’t
Pullin’ his own weight.”

I thought for sure he’d hit me
Glad he didn’t have a gun
I looked around to find a place
Where I could duck and run

But Shorty walked up to me
Just as calm as he could be
Said, “Son, I need to talk to you
Let’s find ourselves a tree.”

He rolled a Bull Durham cigarette
As we sat on the ground
He took himself a puff or two
Then slowly looked around

“Son, I ain’t much on schoolin’
Didn’t get too far with that
But there’s a lot of learnin’
Hidden underneath this hat

I got it all the hard way
Every bump and bruise and fall
Now some of it was easy
But then most weren’t fun a’tall

But one thing that I always got
From any job I’ve done
Is do the best I can each day
And try to make it fun

I know that bustin’ through them rocks
Ain’t what you like to do
By gettin’ mad you’ve made it tough
On me and the whole crew

Now you hired on to cowboy
And you think you’ve got the stuff
You told him you’re a good hand
And the boss has called your bluff

So how’s that gonna make you look
When he comes ridin’ through
And he asks me who dug the holes
and I say it was you

Now we could let it go like this
And take the easy route
But doin’ things the easy way
Ain’t what it’s all about

The boss expects a job well done
From every man he’s hired
He’ll let you slide by once or twice
Then one day you’ll get fired

If you’re not proud of what you do
You won’t amount to much
You’ll bounce around from job to job
Just slightly out of touch

Come mornin’ let’s redig those holes
And get that fence in line
And you and I will save two jobs
Those bein’ yours and mine

And someday you’ll come ridin’ through
And look across this land
And see a fence that’s laid out straight
And know you had a hand

In something that’s withstood the years
Then proud and free from guilt
You’ll smile and say, ‘Boys that’s the fence
That me and Shorty built’.”

– Red Steagall

Your work is a witness for you or against you. Commit to doing your best and you can be proud of what your work says about you.

By the way, if you’d like to hear Red Steagall recite this poem, you can watch it here.

Is stimulation bad?

Let’s address this up front: stimulation is vital. Babies need visual and auditory stimuli to develop normally. And sociologist Robert Ardrey who enumerated these needs maintained that we need stimulation throughout our lives to be emotionally healthy. We need to encounter new ideas, new people, new locations, new songs, new works of art to feel and be truly alive. If you’re creative at all, you know that it’s nearly impossible to create out of a sense of boredom.

But let’s also agree that stimulation, like many other beneficial things, is subject to misuse. We can seek sensation and experiences as a substitute for a healthy sense of identity and or security. We can use cheap imitations of genuine accomplishments to avoid potential pain or loss. We all have our favorite mindless entertainments, and we use them to get a quick hit when we’re procrastinating. I can find no shortage of articles to read when I should be writing, for example. But why do we do this?

Paging Dr. Zimbardo

In his TED Talk titled The Demise of Guys, Dr. Philip Zimbardo explains that westerners, men in particular, have essentially re-wired their brains through consumption of visual media. He says that excessive screen time — particularly web surfing, porn and video games — has created what he calls arousal addiction. This type of addiction creates a powerful craving for novelty — that is, for more and different stimulation. He contrasts this with drug addictions, where the desire is for increased quantities of the same substance.

Your brain on stimulation

So what happens when our brains are stimulated in this way? The arousal response results in production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It’s powerful stuff. Dopamine lights up the brain’s pleasure/reward center and it is part of the neurochemical mechanism of motivation. When you’re producing dopamine you are receiving a naturally occurring positive reinforcement that will cause you to repeat the behavior that created the reward. If you’re generating product or creating something positive, this can be an engine of prosperity. But what if you’re reinforcing the pursuit of pleasure for its own sake?

When a man exposes his brain to excessive stimulation — via junk food, gambling, porn, or video games — dopamine production increases radically. The producers of this stuff know it. In the same way water flowing downhill creates a gouge, then a gully, excessive dopamine creates its own pleasure pathway — a landing pad that demands more traffic. As Zimbardo explains, the desire is for greater variety, not just more of the same. The recipe for loneliness then is: Indulge, rewire your brain, and isolate yourself.

Nothing new under the sun

Man’s tendency to seek too much of a good thing didn’t start with the advent of the internet, any more than his tendency toward violence began with the invention of machine guns. However, the ability to create large-scale impacts in a very short period of time is a product of technological progress. Men have always been fascinated by sex, but the anonymity of the internet has provided access to far more images far more frequently. Zimbardo claims the average man views 50 pornographic video clips per week. If so, the effects of arousal addiction are likely to be more widespread and more profound

But let’s go back to the root of all this: we need stimulation, and we are biochemically wired to reward ourselves for it. The feeling of accomplishment when you achieve a goal, complete a project, take a trophy buck, or ask that cute girl for her number — that’s all proper and a result of dopamine doing its job. This is natural and beneficial in its proper place and proportion.

I submit to you that the problem is seeking that dopamine rush without doing the difficult work that leads to legitimate rewards. Each of us has a mission, and we need to be at our respective posts. Faithfulness brings a good reward. Shirking your duty to chase shiny objects leads to all kinds of calamity. Let’s look at an example from ancient history.

Oh look — a squirrel

In chapter 11 of 2 Samuel, there’s a famous story of a king seeking stimulation in the wrong places. It goes like this:

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.” Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.” And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite also died. Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting. And he instructed the messenger, “When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, then, if the king’s anger rises, and if he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”

So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. The messenger said to David, “The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall. Some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter displease you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.”

When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”

Go to school on David, or learn your own painful lessons

It almost looks like the plot of a Hollywood thriller, doesn’t it? Voyeurism, lust, adultery, conspiracy, murder, corruption, and a cover-up. None of it necessary.

Notice first that King David was at home when he should have been on the battlefield with his army. Maybe he had been too successful too soon, or maybe he had gotten bored with winning. No matter the reason he was casting about on his roof, spying on his neighbor’s wife as she bathed. Maybe she was bored, too, and wanted the excitement of an affair with the powerful king next door. Perhaps. But if he had been faithful to his mission, his men, and his God, he wouldn’t have been there in the first place.

There’s more to the story, and I urge you to read on in 2 Samuel. You can start here. But I want to encourage you — and me — to get solid on your identity and your purpose, and avoid the cheap buzz that fake stimulation creates.

Be a producer, not a consumer

If you are in the grip of one of the fake stimuli, I challenge you to quit being a consumer and to begin to produce, to create. You know your gifts, spend your time seeking the rewards of genuine accomplishment by making something that others can enjoy or from which they can benefit. Create sculptures, paint pictures, plant gardens, paint houses, tell stories, write songs, stage plays, serve others. And learn to enjoy the satisfaction of real rewards.

So how about you? How are you experiencing accomplishment and avoiding arousal addiction? Add your comments below.

It sticks to everything, gets everywhere, and you never get rid of it.” – Anonymous (or perhaps I said it first)

Over the past several posts we have been dealing with the primary emotional needs of Identity, Stimulation, and Security. Playwright-turned-anthropologist Robert Ardrey deserves the credit for identifying these three — and I hope you will read or re-read what I have written on the subject. You can start here or here.

In this post, I want to explore the relationship between Identity and Stimulation.

Insert Personality Here

Crazy

Despite human beings’ capacity for reason, we have abundant evidence that man is far from the rational creature he thinks himself to be. “What evidence,” you say? Look around. Why do women dye their hair colors not found in nature? Why do men wear socks with sandals — or jorts? Why do they grow long beards? Ask more than one and you’ll likely get an answer that is not any more complicated than, “I like it.” As answers go, this isn’t nonsense, but it is hardly empirical.

I submit to you that “liking it” is shorthand for “I want to be noticed.”

What’s crazy is refusing to analyze any behavior to see whether — or not — it makes sense. That is, does it lead in a positive direction? Or, said another way, “If I keep doing this, what will the results be in a year? In ten years? In twenty years?

An important announcement from the poetry corner. I have written a Haiku that helps to illustrate the point I’m trying to make. Here it is for your cultural enrichment:

Gen X Angst

Haiku writing youth

I’m a pierced nonconformist

Just like all my friends

                  -George E. Booth

Two facets

This being noticed is part of the overlap between Identity and Stimulation. One seeks validation (being noticed favorably) by adopting the dress, manner of speech, and behavior of the favored group. Conversely, one can seek negative attention or signify separateness by cultivating rejection from a disfavored group. In the 1960’s, baby boomers signified their rebellion through long hair, bell bottoms, and not bathing (seriously), signifying their indifference to approval of their parents and grandparents, whom they dubbed, “The Establishment.”

These parents and grandparents sought to maintain the culture, hairstyles, dress, and decorum they had learned on their way to adulthood — with tours through the Great Depression and World War II. The elder cohort thought the young ones were crazy, and staunchly held to their patriotic, straitlaced manners. The younger cohort thought this adherence to tradition was mindless conformity — and they thought it crazy not to embrace new experiences.

About glitter

If your upbringing included kindergarten, playschool, Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, or arts and crafts, you probably had at least one encounter with glitter. Tiny little squares of colorful, reflective whatever-it-is that added sparkle and shine to our creations. It was fun, interesting, and different, but very hard to control, and nearly impossible to eradicate. I recall finding “clues” in the family car for weeks after coming home with a class project that made use of glitter. (I have to give credit to the manufacturer who sought to sell glue with the glitter already in it — much less messy.)

So why do I say crazy is like glitter? In the same way glitter can be fun and novel, crazy people can also be amusing. For a while. But like glitter, most people’s crazy won’t stay where it’s put. Drama leaves the confines where it is interesting and gets everywhere. Depending on the severity of the crazy and the ensuing damage, you may never get rid of it. Most truly crazy people are ultimately way past fun.

What makes crazy so crazy?

I believe it starts with the denial of reality. Most of the crazy in the world betrays a disconnectedness from the world that is. People in groups will seek to sway others by asserting something clearly refutable by evidence. Consumers of these messages — particularly those with no tether to reality and seeking acceptance — go along with it and the sum total of crazy increases. With respect to to those with confusion regarding sex and gender, I have marveled that an entire social order should ignore plain biology to accommodate such a minute sliver of the population. And I am more surprised at the slavish behavior exhibited by publicly traded corporations. Even more surprising is the vitriol aimed at those who assert something as self-evident and simple as the existence of maleness and femaleness. I’m waiting for the denunciations of gender denialism — but I won’t hold my breath.

The second aspect that makes crazy so crazy is the indifference to rules, norms, and mores. “Rules for thee, but not for me,” was the heart of Pharisaic practice. “Rules don’t apply to me” didn’t work so well for them, as I recall. But notice how the crazy people you know regularly flout the written and unwritten rules on the road, in restaurants, and on the job. Our countrymen admire the rascal, the scamp, but it is truly unpleasant to have to work around — or clean up behind — the crazy.

The truly crazy seek to escape consequences. This is in an interesting phenomenon because some of these jokers do seem to get away with it. Facts don’t matter. Right and wrong don’t matter. They won’t get caught. And if they do, nothing bad will happen. In case you’re wondering, this is not the kind of outlook or legacy we encourage here.

Ultimately, this is a form of narcissism/egoism. If I am the only thing in the universe that’s real (as far as my feelings inform me), I can do exactly as I please.

But why do they do it?

I’m so glad you asked! Part of the reason I’ve emphasized identity followed by Truth is to make this next point clearer. People do crazy things because, having abandoned Truth, they do not know who they are or why they are here. This leads to a good deal of experimentation. Since I’m feeling generous, I’ll call it questing.

The quest is to overcome the boredom that a rootless, purposeless life will produce. Think about the worst stereotype of American middle-class consumerism. Glassy-eyed, stoop-shouldered, and paunchy, homo economicus americanus gets up every morning to earn enough money to keep a roof over his head, so he can get up every morning…

This is where the synthetic stimulants enter. These range from television to fantasy sports, to video games, to gambling, to intoxicants, to gossip, to stirring up conflicts among people, to living vicariously through celebrities or even one’s own children. (And yes, porn would be included in this grouping, too.) Not all of these would appeal to every man, but a bored man will be attracted to one or more of them. The goal is to fill the emptiness with experiences, with feelings — even if they aren’t rooted in reality.

I want to be fair and add that leisure time is a blessing, and a measure of our comparative affluence. And Story is an important part of being human. So please understand that I am for wholesome pastimes, just not at the expense of Living and being truly alive.

Contrast fake stimulation with a life of purpose and consequence where every day is vitally important, and the fruit of one’s labor is enhanced by the satisfaction of the tasks completed and delight at the work ahead.

Initiation: getting your question answered

On several occasions, I’ve written about the importance of masculine initiation, and how I initiated my sons into manhood. I also published my elder son’s account of his initiation. From this, you might conclude (correctly) that I think this is important. Let me explain why.

In his book Wild at Heart, John Eldredge writes that a man’s foundational question is “Do I have what it takes?” The process of masculine initiation aims to address this question affirmatively. In my sons’ case, I took them backpacking to pose a physical and a psychological challenge whose outcome was not a given. Clearly I wanted them to succeed, and I prepared them and encouraged them, but it was up to each of them to find the resourcefulness and determination to succeed.

A man who never receives an answer to his question will never be settled in his identity.* He may drift from job to job, or from woman to woman. Or he may work far below his potential, or sabotage his own success. All because he is afraid to be exposed as less than a man. This is the realm of the False Self and this is also the root cause of crazy.

Love, Dad

Statistically, a lot of young men are growing up in households without a father, and many of them don’t have a man in their life to show them the ropes. I can’t be everyone’s father or godfather — I can’t really be everyone’s mentor or friend. It isn’t possible. But I write these posts and offer what I have learned so these things don’t have to mystify you.

You may not know your dad, but you have a Father in Heaven who loves you. And He sent me to tell you these things so you can be a man who avoids crazy and lives a life of consequence — of Thriving Authentic Masculinity.

This starts by understanding who God is and who you are in relation to Him. This is the beginning of understanding, of wisdom, and of discovering your identity and purpose. I’ve written many words on these subjects already, so let me encourage you to seek those posts out.

In the meantime, let me give you some advice with regard to crazy:

Don’t date or marry crazy – She won’t change. But for God, people don’t change.

Don’t co-sign crazy – It’s bad financial practice, and you’re only enabling more jackassery.

Don’t make your living from crazy – It’s immoral to sell people the tools of their enslavement

Avoid other people’s drama – Recognize it for trap it is — especially the classic “Let’s You and Him Fight”

Don’t try to fix other people’s crazy – Love everyone and live your life. Pray for the crazy ones you know, but unless you’re a trained counselor, leave that to the pros.

Let God initiate you into manhood – If you didn’t get it from your dad, God wants to do this for you.

Get some sane friends – encourage each other in your respective missions.

So how about you – In what ways are you giving crazy a wide berth? Add your comments below.

*Girls need their fathers’ blessing, just as surely as boys need theirs. This father-absence or indifference shows up differently in boys and girls, but the result in both is an expression of crazy.

In a previous post, I explained the debt a man owes to his employer. (If you weren’t paying attention then, you can read it here.) In that post I presented a general rule that employees should find a way to say yes to every reasonable request from a boss, provided the request isn’t illegal, unethical, or immoral. However I also explained that there are times when it is absolutely appropriate to say no, even when doing so brings negative consequences.

Enter Daniel

In the Old Testament book of Daniel, we see the story of a young man of Judah who was taken captive along with three of his friends by King Nebuchadnezzar and forcibly resettled in Babylon. Some scholars disagree on this point, but since Daniel and his colleagues reported to the king’s chief eunuch, it is not out of the question that these young men were castrated as part of their captivity. Not exactly the “onboarding” or the welcome a new hire would wish for.

The king assigned the best of these young men to study the history and culture of the Babylonians for three years, and upon passing their tests, to serve as wise men and seers in the royal court. Part of this preparation included eating the food and drinking the wine that Nebuchadnezzar himself ate — food that was ritually unclean for devout Hebrews.

Daniel had a dilemma. He could displease God by violating the ceremonial law, or he could displease a tyrant by refusing his hospitality — a capital offense. Instead of offending, he asked if he and his devout friends could eat vegetables and drink water instead. When the chief eunuch protested that he would receive the king’s wrath if Daniel fared poorly, Daniel suggested a ten-day trial. When he and his fellow test subjects exhibited better health and a better appearance, Daniel received permission to continue eating consistent with the law of God.

Along the way, Daniel and his friends — who received the Babylonian names Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — received honor and promotions as they remained faithful to God even as they served in the court of Nebuchadnezzar and the rulers who succeeded him.

Thrown to the Lions

A quirk of tyrants and other absolute rulers is that they tend to overestimate their greatness. In Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar created an idol in his image and sought to punish anyone who failed to worship it. After Nebuchadnezzar’s son Belshazzar fell to Darius the Mede, Darius himself tended to grandiosity.

To be fair to Darius, some advisers who were jealous of Daniel sought to eliminate him by tricking Darius into signing a ban on prayer or petition to any god or man but the king. Under Medo-Persian law, a decree signed by the king was irrevocable. The conniving officials knew that Daniel was pious, and they spied on him as he prayed three times a day to the God of Israel. When the corrupt schemers reported Daniel’s disregard to the king, Darius tried unsuccessfully to amend his decree, but with regrets he ultimately kept the law. As decreed, he threw Daniel to the lions, covering the den with a large stone and affixing it with the royal seal and left him there overnight.

Lessons from Daniel

I’ve listed some of the principles that I have adopted based on the life of Daniel:

Propose an alternative – Daniel acted constructively to resolve the dilemma over eating unclean foods. When you’re faced with a task or duty that violates your conscience, this is a possible course of action. In the US, employment law requires reasonable accommodation for religious restrictions.

Present your results – Daniel mustered the facts and showed the benefits of his proposed dietary alternative. Your boss may not share your beliefs, but if the results are clear, only a micro-manager would find fault.

Perform in every area – In all other aspects of his work, Daniel came through without compromise. Look, not every task is going to be pleasant, but not every task is a moral quandary either. Seek to learn constantly, and seek to excel in every aspect of your work — especially the parts you like least.

Profess the truth – One thing you’ll notice about Daniel is that in every face-to-face encounter with the king, he pointed consistently to the sovereignty of the Living God. I think if I had been imprisoned, taken from my home, and emasculated, I would find it easy to be bitter and non-compliant. Daniel overcame all those circumstances, told the truth always, and served as an adviser to four kings. In addition, God let Daniel know that he was “greatly loved.”

Persist – When you know the right thing to do, make sure you do it. Don’t shade the truth. Don’t pretend to go along to avoid the consequences. Throughout his story, Daniel didn’t waver. This is what integrity looks like.

Prepare to endure the consequences – When you know that remaining faithful — to God, your conscience, and your principles — will put you at odds with your employer, accept the consequences. Daniel did not protest or fight his being thrown to the lions, but God delivered him from being eaten. Not so the traitors who conspired to trap Daniel.

One last rule of thumb

I know I’ve said it before, but the brightest line for determining whether or not a boss’s request calls for a rejection is this:
If he commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, do not comply. That was where Daniel dug in, faced certain death, and survived.

So how about you? How are you preparing to live with integrity in your workplace? Add your comments below.
