One more rep. One more set…<\/p><\/div>\n

You may notice that we talk a lot about perseverance<\/a> here. \u00a0There’s a reason for that. \u00a0If you want to thrive as a man, you have to learn to become resilient<\/a> so that when you experience a setback, you have the grit and determination to get back up and try again.<\/p>\n

We live in a fallen world, and as a result, things go wrong. \u00a0We spill soup on our favorite shirts. Thieves steal from us. \u00a0We get passed over for jobs or promotions. \u00a0Relationships break, or simply fade. \u00a0Loved ones die. \u00a0Clearly, some setbacks are merely annoying, while others are devastating. \u00a0But without resilience — the mindset that we won’t let circumstances defeat us\u00a0— we can be neutralized and miss the opportunity to make our mark on a world that needs us to be men.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0following is a poem I first read on a visit to my grandparents’ house — and read again on many subsequent visits. \u00a0It may sound a bit dated, but I have found myself recalling its message often throughout my life to this point. \u00a0Here it is:<\/p>\n

YOU MUSTN’T QUIT<\/strong><\/p>\n

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will
\nWhen the road you’re trudging seems all uphill
\nWhen the funds are low and the debts are high
\nAnd you want to smile, but you have to sigh
\nWhen care is pressing you down a bit
\nRest! if you must — but never quit.<\/p>\n

Life is queer, with its twists and turns,
\nAs every one of us sometimes learns
\nAnd many a failure turns about
\nWhen he might have won if he’d stuck it out;
\nStick to your task, though the pace seems slow —
\nYou may succeed with one more blow.<\/p>\n

Success is failure turned inside out —
\nThe silver tint of the clouds of doubt —
\nAnd you never can tell how close you are,
\nIt may be near when it seems afar;
\nSo stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit —
\nIt’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.<\/p>\n
