– C. S. Lewis from “Willing Slaves of the Welfare State”

Last fall, David Horowitz’s FrontPage Mag published an article by Mallory Millett titled “Marxist Feminism’s Ruined Lives.” The article described what Millett saw as a young divorcée in the 1960’s at the birth of the modern (second-wave) feminist movement, and the toll it took on her and others. Millett’s older sister Kate Millett was one of the key figures in the movement — Kate Millett and her book Sexual Politics deserve full credit for helping spawn women’s studies programs in nearly every American university.

The unholy litany

In her article, Mallory Millett describes a meeting she attended with her sister — a Marxist consciousness-raising event that included a call-and-response chant between the leader and those in attendance. According to (Mallory) Millett, it went like this:

“‘Why are we here today?” she asked.
“To make revolution,” they answered.
“What kind of revolution?” she replied.
“The Cultural Revolution,” they chanted.
“And how do we make Cultural Revolution?” she demanded.
“By destroying the American family!” they answered.
“How do we destroy the family?” she came back.
“By destroying the American Patriarch,” they cried exuberantly.
“And how do we destroy the American Patriarch?” she replied.
“By taking away his power!”
“How do we do that?”
“By destroying monogamy!” they shouted.
“How can we destroy monogamy?”

Their answer left me dumbstruck, breathless, disbelieving my ears. Was I on planet earth? Who were these people?

“By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality!” they resounded.

Surprise! You’re a target

Did you understand that if you are or intend to be a husband and a father — a patriarch — that you are also a target? According to the Marxist feminists, it would only be possible to supplant the culture of the United States by destroying the family as its central institution, and it would only be possible to destroy the family by destroying its spiritual head. That would be you and me.

Why are we talking about this?

I recognize that this is a bit off the normal track for this blog, but we have discussed the ongoing crisis in masculinity, and the need for us to become men who live out of our masculine strength. Now perhaps you see what is at stake. We always want to offer practical encouragement here, and this post is no different. If I sent you on an errand, and I knew there was danger along the route, I would tell you — consider this a friendly warning.

In the same way you wouldn’t enter a lacrosse game without your helmet, pads, gloves and stick (and, of course, your cup), you must go into today’s classrooms, workplaces and entertainments aware of the plan to destroy men. So consider the aim is to take you out, to neutralize your masculine strength, to render you powerless, impotent, emasculated and ineffective. Worst of all, the plan is not to overpower you, but to entice you into surrendering.

What time is it?

Men, it’s late. If you are in doubt about the effectiveness of this strategy, consider your own opinions and attitudes concerning promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality — and how they may have changed in the past ten years. Now consider the opinions and attitudes of your friends, classmates and colleagues. Next consider the messages concerning these four forces that you’ve encountered in classrooms, news articles and reports, in movies and television programs and in social media.

As you see, America has undergone a cataclysmic change in its mores since the consciousness-raising event attended by Mallory Millett.

Is it hopeless?

I think the answer is no, but it will not be easy. Remember, promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality can influence your environment, but since each of us has moral agency, you do not have to participate in any of it. Here are some suggestions:

Don’t take the bait — These weapons only work on you if you let them. Sexual sin is tempting, but recognize what’s behind it and take the long view.

Clean up your diet — Don’t feed your mind with stories and images that undermine your masculine strength, or that promote your destruction.

Audit the institutions you’re part of — Use your freedom of association to find, found or fund organizations that promote and value authentic masculinity. (This is why I’m on this corner of the internet, by the way.) If you need to change churches, employers, schools, vote with your feet. When you realize you’ve stepped onto the conveyor belt at the slaughterhouse, you have every right to step off of it.

Enlist allies — find brothers who are committed to the same values. Not all women are on board with the destruction of the family. Find them. As I pointed out previously, the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey — although promoting promiscuity and eroticism — repudiates Marxist feminism’s anti-masculine aims, since the audience seems keenly interested in a dominant man.

Build your body and your mind — You are on your way to becoming the best possible version of yourself, aren’t you? You need strength to withstand the allure of temptation in every form.

Challenge the assumptions — As you encounter these anti-male ideas, be prepared to question their origins and their legitimacy. Don’t be afraid to point out the consequences of four-plus decades of Marxist feminism and ask if we’re better off in any way.

Reform your manners — English abolitionist, William Wilberforce, worked until the day he died for the abolition of slavery and for “the reformation of manners.” As men, we should take up this cause and make it our own. If you’re married, start by leading your family, even if it’s difficult. Let’s reform our own character after that of Jesus, and work to liberate men and women in the clutches of these destructive forces. Just by living fearlessly and unabashedly as a man, you’ll cause others to find their courage. We can do this with God’s help.

Not everyone is consciously engaged in the cultural Marxist project, but it seems clear that the political left has embraced its tenets wholeheartedly. Even if you think I’m overstating the case, enough people are going along with it in enough positions of influence you should be keenly aware of their aims and act accordingly.

You do have a choice, over your attitudes and actions — over the ideas you embrace or reject, and the ones you allow to rule your thoughts. And in the US, you have the right to vote for leaders who respect your liberty and your rights, and for policies that reflect your values. I will add that the legitimate aim of equality under the law has been transformed into a Trojan horse to destroy a free people. You do not have to comply.

So how about you? In what ways have you gone along with the plan for your own destruction? How do you intend to regain your strength? Add your comments below.

Learn from the wisest king in history

Men: We have to talk about sex. If there’s one area where this generation is stuck, this is it.

The Water Was Dirty Before You Got In

Now, before you conclude that I’m pointing my finger at you, please realize that the Boomer cohort gave us the sexual revolution and rampant divorce, and the Gen X cohort was equally careless about sex and marriage. But it’s even worse than that. These are the guys who grew up to convince you that everyone but you was sexually active, to urge the women you know to emulate the worst of promiscuous men, and to offer you pornography pretty much anywhere and anytime — and all so they could separate you from your money. If you want poor examples, the generations ahead of you are shot through with them.

Applying wisdom — that’s a horse of a different color!

So if you’re a typical American male, you were probably exposed to pornography somewhere around age ten. But even if you didn’t see any sexually explicit magazines, videos or websites in your youth, you’ve been awash in a culture that has turned sex into a commodity devoid of any spiritual significance. As a man who has spent much of his career in and around sales, I say it’s lazy to use sex to sell. As bad as that is, it’s worse to be so checked out that you allow it to influence you. There is a better way.

Meet King Solomon

In the Old Testament (that’s the first 39 books of the Bible), we meet a king named Solomon. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba (there’s a story about the misuse of sex, right there). When Solomon succeeded his father as the king of Israel, God told Solomon to ask him for anything. In reply, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people. This pleased God and he promised Solomon that no one would be wiser or more honored than he.

In addition to building the Temple in Jerusalem, Solomon reportedly had 1,000 wives and concubines. (Here I should point out that just because the Bible describes something, it does not prescribe it.) Solomon is also credited with several books of the Bible — Ecclesiastes, The Song of Solomon, and Proverbs. And that brings us to the purpose of this post.

In Proverbs 5 Solomon writes this:

My son, be attentive to my wisdom;

incline your ear to my understanding,

that you may keep discretion,

and your lips may guard knowledge.

For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey,

and her speech is smoother than oil,

but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,

sharp as a two-edged sword.

And now, O sons, listen to me,

and my heart despised reproof!

I did not listen to the voice of my teachers

or incline my ear to my instructors.”

Be the Gatekeeper

Among his words of advice is a clear instruction to men to be the moral leaders in the arena of sexuality. His counsel is not that women are evil, but that a man should be aware that some are evil. I’d add that some don’t know any better. A man should take care not to be led astray by his desires, nor to let a forbidden woman play on those desires for her own ends. So if you’re in a dating relationship, you need to establish the moral framework and see to it that you avoid the circumstances that pose the greatest temptation.

I’ve encountered a popular misconception among some Christians: that women are inherently more virtuous than men. It isn’t true, and the Bible doesn’t support that idea at all. Men and women are equally fallen and equally in need of the grace of God to redeem their brokenness in all of life, not just their sexuality.

What Difference Does It Make?

Notice what’s at stake — a man’s honor, his years, his strength, his earnings his peace, his legacy, and his self-respect — and it all hinges on his self-control. I have lived long enough to know that regret is expensive. By that I mean there are decisions I took as a young man that I would not repeat if I had that choice. And no amount of wishing can undo the harms I caused through my immaturity, ignorance, or wilfulness. I am thankful that my regrets are mercifully few, but I am writing this blog to help you get the lessons without the regrets. Solomon’s life and his words are a free education in wise living — and you don’t have to suffer to get it.

The Rest of The Story

I’d love to tell you that Solomon himself was a perfect example to follow in the realm of sexual morality, but that isn’t true. Despite his wise and correct teaching about the snare of illicit sex, his fondness for the ladies led him to abandon faithfulness to God and to worship idols. Although it was tragic, this was, in fact, a mere formality, since any man who loves sex more than he loves God is already worshiping an idol.

It Isn’t Easy

To those of you who have committed to the proper use of God’s gift of sex, I want to encourage you to persevere. Honor God with your body and trust Him to give you what you need. And to those of you who have not, but now want to live chastely, know that God is always willing to welcome His repentant sons home. Even better, God promises to help us overcome temptation — even sexual temptation — going forward from here.

God’s standards for sexual morality are truly counter-cultural. But as Solomon’s good words and bad example demonstrate, they are critically important for men and the women they love — especially today.

Is stimulation bad?

Let’s address this up front: stimulation is vital. Babies need visual and auditory stimuli to develop normally. And sociologist Robert Ardrey who enumerated these needs maintained that we need stimulation throughout our lives to be emotionally healthy. We need to encounter new ideas, new people, new locations, new songs, new works of art to feel and be truly alive. If you’re creative at all, you know that it’s nearly impossible to create out of a sense of boredom.

But let’s also agree that stimulation, like many other beneficial things, is subject to misuse. We can seek sensation and experiences as a substitute for a healthy sense of identity and or security. We can use cheap imitations of genuine accomplishments to avoid potential pain or loss. We all have our favorite mindless entertainments, and we use them to get a quick hit when we’re procrastinating. I can find no shortage of articles to read when I should be writing, for example. But why do we do this?

Paging Dr. Zimbardo

In his TED Talk titled The Demise of Guys, Dr. Philip Zimbardo explains that westerners, men in particular, have essentially re-wired their brains through consumption of visual media. He says that excessive screen time — particularly web surfing, porn and video games — has created what he calls arousal addiction. This type of addiction creates a powerful craving for novelty — that is, for more and different stimulation. He contrasts this with drug addictions, where the desire is for increased quantities of the same substance.

Your brain on stimulation

So what happens when our brains are stimulated in this way? The arousal response results in production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It’s powerful stuff. Dopamine lights up the brain’s pleasure/reward center and it is part of the neurochemical mechanism of motivation. When you’re producing dopamine you are receiving a naturally occurring positive reinforcement that will cause you to repeat the behavior that created the reward. If you’re generating product or creating something positive, this can be an engine of prosperity. But what if you’re reinforcing the pursuit of pleasure for its own sake?

When a man exposes his brain to excessive stimulation — via junk food, gambling, porn, or video games — dopamine production increases radically. The producers of this stuff know it. In the same way water flowing downhill creates a gouge, then a gully, excessive dopamine creates its own pleasure pathway — a landing pad that demands more traffic. As Zimbardo explains, the desire is for greater variety, not just more of the same. The recipe for loneliness then is: Indulge, rewire your brain, and isolate yourself.

Nothing new under the sun

Man’s tendency to seek too much of a good thing didn’t start with the advent of the internet, any more than his tendency toward violence began with the invention of machine guns. However, the ability to create large-scale impacts in a very short period of time is a product of technological progress. Men have always been fascinated by sex, but the anonymity of the internet has provided access to far more images far more frequently. Zimbardo claims the average man views 50 pornographic video clips per week. If so, the effects of arousal addiction are likely to be more widespread and more profound

But let’s go back to the root of all this: we need stimulation, and we are biochemically wired to reward ourselves for it. The feeling of accomplishment when you achieve a goal, complete a project, take a trophy buck, or ask that cute girl for her number — that’s all proper and a result of dopamine doing its job. This is natural and beneficial in its proper place and proportion.

I submit to you that the problem is seeking that dopamine rush without doing the difficult work that leads to legitimate rewards. Each of us has a mission, and we need to be at our respective posts. Faithfulness brings a good reward. Shirking your duty to chase shiny objects leads to all kinds of calamity. Let’s look at an example from ancient history.

Oh look — a squirrel

In chapter 11 of 2 Samuel, there’s a famous story of a king seeking stimulation in the wrong places. It goes like this:

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.” Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.” And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite also died. Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting. And he instructed the messenger, “When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, then, if the king’s anger rises, and if he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”

So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. The messenger said to David, “The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall. Some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter displease you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.”

When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”

Go to school on David, or learn your own painful lessons

It almost looks like the plot of a Hollywood thriller, doesn’t it? Voyeurism, lust, adultery, conspiracy, murder, corruption, and a cover-up. None of it necessary.

Notice first that King David was at home when he should have been on the battlefield with his army. Maybe he had been too successful too soon, or maybe he had gotten bored with winning. No matter the reason he was casting about on his roof, spying on his neighbor’s wife as she bathed. Maybe she was bored, too, and wanted the excitement of an affair with the powerful king next door. Perhaps. But if he had been faithful to his mission, his men, and his God, he wouldn’t have been there in the first place.

There’s more to the story, and I urge you to read on in 2 Samuel. You can start here. But I want to encourage you — and me — to get solid on your identity and your purpose, and avoid the cheap buzz that fake stimulation creates.

Be a producer, not a consumer

If you are in the grip of one of the fake stimuli, I challenge you to quit being a consumer and to begin to produce, to create. You know your gifts, spend your time seeking the rewards of genuine accomplishment by making something that others can enjoy or from which they can benefit. Create sculptures, paint pictures, plant gardens, paint houses, tell stories, write songs, stage plays, serve others. And learn to enjoy the satisfaction of real rewards.

So how about you? How are you experiencing accomplishment and avoiding arousal addiction? Add your comments below.

My son, be attentive to my wisdom;

incline your ear to my understanding,

that you may keep discretion,

and your lips may guard knowledge.

No matter the he was casting about on his roof, spying on his neighbor’s wife as she bathed.

In Part I, we discussed the connection between work and satisfaction. I posited that the contentment that comes from working toward and achieving a goal is great inspiration toward further accomplishment — a virtuous circle. But how does the allure of free affect us individually and as a people?

Millennials are the most marketed to generation in human history. Your ability to see through and resist sales pitches is commendable. On the other hand, this backlash against marketing has caused something of a rush toward “free.” There are some ways that this is a good thing, since paying more for something you could otherwise have for less is poor stewardship.

The legitimate use of free
Sales training expert Jeffrey Gitomer teaches his students to “Give value first.” This giving is genuinely for the benefit of the prospective client, but it’s a step on the path toward a mutually profitable business relationship. To his credit Gitomer extols the importance of establishing and cultivating business friendships — and there is always mutuality in friendship.

In some cases, though, free is used to ensnare you. Think of it this way: Bait is free to a fish, but only until the hook is set.

Music wants to be free?
Perhaps it does, but as a musician, it’s disappointing how many people are unwilling to pay for music downloads (I believe that’s called stealing.) or are unwilling to pay for live entertainment. It’s a bit of a sore point for me, but you wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve been asked to play for free “for the exposure.” I believed them years ago. Curiously, the paying gigs that were supposed to result from playing for exposure never seemed to materialize. This is because — then as now — there’s always somebody else willing to play for free.

If you’re an aspiring musician, have enough integrity to refuse — politely — the opportunity to play for free. You’ll feel better about yourself as an artist, and you might even be able to afford food.

Also, if you’re pirating songs or movies, for the sake of your conscience and your future entertainment, please stop. Thank you.

It’s nobody’s business
And then there’s porn — ubiquitous and free — but not without cost. Let’s list briefly some of the ways free pornography can cost you:

Compulsive behaviors and changes to brain architecture that mirror addiction — Google it.

Relational laziness and social ineptitude — Relationships require investment. Porn provides some of the benefits of marriage (i.e., sexual release) without the effort required to love sacrificially. This makes a man more passive and less resilient. If you desire to love an actual woman, these are not the attributes of the best version of yourself.

Disruption – of desire and empathy, of connection — Porn reinforces self-centeredness and is antagonistic to normal relationship and attraction. Where marital relations bind husband and wife more tightly, making each more sensitive to the other, pornography numbs the soul and more. There are documented cases of pornography-induced sexual dysfunction. Sex was made for two — not a man and a page or screen.

Dilution of marriage and its permanence — I wrote about this in response to Fifty Shades of Grey, but when husbands and wives turn away from each other and toward porn, neither fulfills the God-ordained roles of married lovers. Sex within marriage is designed for the lifelong delight and fulfillment of both the husband and the wife. That this sounds weird only illustrates how far from home we are. The search for fulfillment in a series of imaginary paramours weakens the bonds of marriage. The dissolution of marriages weakens society.

But I don’t pay for it
Even if you aren’t paying to consume pornography, understand that every click on a porn site is a vote. Those votes — signifying demand — are then used to justify the creation of more of the same. This means more people are called on to debase themselves for others’ amusement and arousal. When you realize that not everyone appearing in porn is doing so by choice, it’s even worse. We rightly condemn slavery in America’s history, but would we condone subjecting our wives, our sisters, our daughters or our sons to being commodified and consumed this way in our own time?

I’ll write more on this topic soon, but pornography and prostitution are the primary drivers of human trafficking — the blight of modern-day slavery that afflicts our land even today.

The myth of free love
I was a child in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and I was very aware of the cry of the counterculture — the first wave of baby boomers rejecting the beauty and mystery of the marital union for a series of what are today called hookups. In the name of “free” love, we have paid a dear price. I explained it to a friend of mine this way:

Dr. Frankenstein sought to build a creature — to play God — by assembling a body and trying to jolt it to life. He was only partly successful, for what he succeeded in making was not a living soul, but a monster bent on destruction. Similarly, we can take two sets of genitals and put them together pleasurably. We can create a spark — the nerves and synapses fire and it all works as designed, giving the appearance of life. I would argue, however, that apart from the vital spiritual union of marriage for which God created sex, we have created another monster that is even more destructive.

Free at last — really
God, the creator whose very nature is love, sent His son, Jesus, to reconcile us to the Father. His love was anything but free — Jesus laid down His life to take the full measure of God’s wrath — the punishment each of us deserves . This is a gift we can’t earn and we don’t deserve. God’s fondest desire for each of us is that we would receive His extravagant gift of new life.

He did this to liberate us from the futility of trying to please Him through our own efforts, and from the bondage of trying to steal what He wants to give His beloved children. We can say yes to His love, love Him in return, and learn what it is to be truly free.

So how about you? In what ways have you taken the bait? How have you gotten free? How can I help? Add your comments below?

– Psalm 119:37 (ESV)

I’ll say it: Fifty Shades of Grey is pornography. The fact that you can buy FSOG books at airports and grocery stores doesn’t change its essence. The popularity of the book series and likely success of the upcoming movie cannot alter these products’ intended purpose to titillate and arouse prurient interest. As Eve was deceived in the Garden of Eden, women are choosing to be deceived into making pornography mainstream.

“… do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

A backhanded compliment?
But Fifty Shades of Grey is also an inadvertent repudiation of feminism. Although feminism has denigrated masculinity and tried to cut it down to a more manageable size, note that the male lead in the story is anything but the sensitive new age guy who is feminism’s alleged ideal. For those of you just tuning in, here’s a news flash: Apparently a man who is unapologetically masculine is what really turns a woman on. The sale of ten million books is a pretty significant indicator.

How we got here
We have to blame our original parents, Adam and Eve. God gave them one rule and they blew it. The conflict between men and women began immediately. Women desired to control their husbands and their husbands were to rule over them. God instituted this hierarchy for our protection as a result of our rebellion.

The Bible teaches that the man is the head of his wife and Christ is the head of the man. Both men and women alike are called to submit to God out of reverence, but a man must choose to submit to Christ, while the woman must choose to submit to God by submitting to her husband. Given the curse of Eden, we can see that this is an ongoing challenge for men and women. The popularity of FSOG suggests that women want and need their men to be strong.

Falling short
Unfortunately, too many men of the church have accepted the housebroken, emasculated version of masculinity deemed acceptable by feminism — to the point where well-meaning men have retreated from the field. Some of this is a byproduct of fatherlessness. Tragically, some of this is also a result of poor teaching on male spiritual headship from pulpits and para-church organizations.

This misbegotten desire to give women what they “really want,” results in the abdication of masculine strength on the part of men, and a loss of interest on the part of women. As a result the marriage bed falls into disuse or misuse.

Women who successfully emasculate their husbands through their rebellion lose respect for an adversary so easily vanquished. Desire follows respect out the door. These women seek out a fictional alpha male, somebody who owns his passion, takes charge and really acts the man. Some women go beyond mere fantasy and get involved in emotional or physical affairs.

At the same time, some of these emasculated men fall victim to the allure of pornography and or prostitution. Because they have allowed themselves to be chased out of their leadership role, they seek a fantasy world where women submit to them. This is sordid and lazy, as this is attempting to possess a woman’s beauty without doing the hard work of building and maintaining a marriage.

The sad result of men who won’t lead and women who won’t follow is two people turned away from each other. To be interested in sex, but not with one’s own spouse makes a “marriage” that is more like co-ed roommates. This is so much less than what we’re made for. Submission gets a bad rap these days, but godly submission is the pathway to marital fulfillment.

The big picture
Mutual submission is not equal submission according to the model of Christ and the church. Jesus is the bridegroom and the head. The church is the bride and the body. Marriage is a living picture of the relationship between Christ and the church. The head leads the body but both are necessary and valued. Still, the head is, well… the head.

A thought experiment
If Jesus were to place the bride on a pedestal the way Christian men are often advised to do with their wives, what a different picture we would have. Note that Jesus didn’t say, “Yes dear. I’m sorry dear. Whatever you say, dear.” He didn’t let her (that is, us) have her own way. Instead consider the letters to the seven churches in the book of Revelation where Jesus commends and corrects these churches as needed.

The spirit of Jezebel and the spirit of truth
In keeping with our discussion of the Fifty Shades phenomenon, let’s look at how Jesus speaks to his bride in the letter to the church at Thyatira.

“I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.”
– Revelation 2:19-25 (NIV)

Consider how Jesus speaks lovingly to her. He has already proved his love by coming for her, dying for her. He commends what is praiseworthy but never abdicates his headship.

Now he speaks a stern word of correction to her for tolerating false teaching that promotes sexual immorality. Clearly he loves her — and note this: He isn’t afraid of rocking the boat to bring her to repentance. This is our model.

If wives and girlfriends who follow Jesus plan to watch FSOG, they should ask themselves how they would feel about their husband’s/boyfriend’s spending that evening downloading porn from the filthiest corners of the internet.

Isn’t it wrong to judge?
It’s true that Jesus said, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” But that prohibition was against rendering final judgment in terms of someone’s final, Heaven or Hell disposition. He never meant we should turn our brains off or refuse to discriminate between good and evil. After all, he is the one who said a tree is known by its fruit. How can you evaluate fruit without using — gasp!– judgment?

A final note:
Headship is not a license for self-indulgence or abuse. If we love our wives the way Christ loved the church, that is a sacrificial, serving kind of love that leads our wives toward Christlikeness. We can’t make it about ourselves and succeed in this task. Even so, a man must lead with strength and gentleness. Your woman may not enjoy your confronting her, but if you are strong, loving and consistent she will respect you — and even more, she will desire you.

So how about you? How are you learning to be the spiritual head and build a strong marriage? Add your comments below.

Men: We have to talk about sex.

If there’s one area where millennials are stuck, this is it.

The Water Was Dirty Before You Got In
Now, before you conclude that I’m pointing my finger at you, please realize that the Boomer cohort gave us the sexual revolution and rampant divorce, and the Gen X cohort were equally careless about sex and marriage. But it’s even worse than that. These are the guys who grew up to convince you that everyone but you was sexually active, to encourage the women you know to emulate the worst of promiscuous men, and to offer you pornography pretty much anywhere and anytime — and all so they could separate you from your money.

In the Old Testament (that’s the first 39 books of the Bible), we encounter a king named Solomon. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba.

(Here I should point out that just because the Bible describes something, it does not therefore prescribe it.) Solomon is also credited with several books of the Bible. And that brings us to the purpose of this post.

In Proverbs 5 Solomon writes this:

My son, be attentive to my wisdom;

incline your ear to my understanding,

Be the Gatekeeper
Among his words of advice is a clear instruction to men to be the moral leaders in the arena of sexuality. His counsel is not that women are evil, but that a man needs to be aware that some are evil. I’d add that some don’t know any better. A man should take care not to be led astray by his desires, nor to let a forbidden woman play on those desires for her own ends. So if you’re in a dating relationship, you need to establish the moral framework and see to it that you avoid the circumstances that pose the greatest temptation.

What Difference Does It Make?
Notice what’s at stake — a man’s honor, his years, his strength, his earnings his peace and his self-respect — and it all hinges on his self-control.

The Rest of The Story
I’d love to tell you that Solomon himself was a perfect example to follow in this regard, but that isn’t true. His fondness for the ladies led him to abandon faithfulness to God and to worship idols. This was, in fact, a mere formality, since any man who loves sex more than he loves God is already worshiping an idol.

It Isn’t Easy
To those of you who have committed to the proper use of God’s gift of sex, I want to encourage you to persevere. And to those of you who who want to live chastely, God is always willing to welcome His repentant sons home. As we all know, God’s standards for sexual morality are truly counter-cultural. But as Solomon’s words and bad example demonstrate, this is critical — especially today.
